When it comes to Transformers, I’m old school. I grew up watching the original cartoon, and playing with the original toys. I saw the original (legendary) animated movie in the cinema, and it’s still one of my favourite movies of all time. No new Transformers movie can top that masterpiece.
So anyway, my brother took his kids to see Transformers One, insisting it was a good film, and even better than the 1986 masterpiece I just mentioned! It isn’t. It’s a ‘Marvel-esque’ Transformers movie; full of silly jokes that diffuse any tension in the story, which is fine for a kid’s movie, but also lowers the sense of jeopardy the characters are facing. I also felt that the CG artwork was poor. When you have Sony pushing the envelope of what a 3-D animated movie can look like (with their Spider-Verse films), and even Dreamworks trying new styles in their movies, the visuals in this film look stale in comparison. Not a bad film though, and a million times better than any of the live-action Transformer films. Worth a watch for sure, but it doesn’t usurp the 1986 movie!
