Surprisingly, I’d never seen this film, and the passing of Robert Redford inspired me to finally watch it.
It’s good. Very much the prototype for the anti-government (anti-James Bond) spy movies that resurfaced post-9/11, as well as a direct influence on the first ‘Mission Impossible’ movie, and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. That said, the choice of music, and the (forced) romance are very jarring, as they’re both very 1970s and not at all in the vain of the ‘sustained tension’ that we’re used to in modern movies. The romance, especially, is the weakest aspect of the film, as it’s just so incredulous! Romance aside, the plot and the ‘conspiracy theory’ aspects of the story are still very relevant, and actually seem tame in comparison to how governments behave nowadays. If you fancy a trip back to the 70s and want to see a good Robert Redford movie, then this definitely fits the bill, especially if you want to watch something that doesn’t spoon-feed you everything (like so many modern movies do).
