The Substance - Friday 1st November 2024

The hype surrounding this film is insane. It’s seriously one of the worst films I've EVER seen! I didn't like it from the start, but persevered, given the sheer number of ridiculously positive reviews. Forget about he story, even the look of the film was not to my taste: extreme close ups and an overuse of the fisheye lens were nauseating, not to mention the garish colour palette.

Honestly, I feel like anyone who watches this movie has been catfished by the positive reviews; because it's definitely a test of endurance to see if you'll make it to the end. And man, does this film not end! It is Sooooo long!! Yet, it doesn't even have anything new to say!

Beauty standards are ageist? OMG! No way! Really?? The entertainment industry prefers younger women to older ones?? Who knew??!! Older women feel pressured to stay young, so much so that they disfigure themselves?? What a revelation!!

When movies are this bad, I don't blame audiences that prefer to watch Tik Tok; especially when these bad movies are then lauded with praise and accolades.
Yuck.
