Another slow, plodding film by Steven Spielberg that takes absolutely no creative or storytelling risks, and feeds you a story that seeks to reinforce the old-fashioned notion that the news media are the good guys.
Obviously, to push this narrative, American movies have to constantly refer back to the time when maybe they were the good guys, in challenging Richard Nixon. No mention of the hundreds of other times when they just did the bidding of whatever belligerent government was in power. But I digress. A story about a news editor and a publisher ‘doing the right thing’ shouldn’t be worthy of a movie, should it? It should just be a fact of their everyday work. Which only proves how rare it must be. The film, as said, is slow and pretty boring. There are no twists and turns in the story, no villain to keep our heroes on their toes (unless you count the legal department), and it’s all just very procedural. If you’re going to tell a story like this, the characters absolutely MUST be compelling! They should have personal lives that cause conflict and divide their loyalties; the stakes should be high, and they should be personal! Instead, we get a bunch of wealthy establishment figures, played by establishment actors, in a film made by an establishment filmmaker. Yawn. Take some damn risks Mr. Spielberg! You’ve more than earned it!!
