I had low expectations going in; I’m not a particular fan of Superman, and my favourite on-screen incarnation is Richard Donner’s 1978 film starring Christopher Reeve. That said, I kept an open mind. The audience wants to like the movie they’re paying to see.
I liked David Corenswet as Superman; he had an affable quality that made the god-like Superman more human, but I’m still not sold on the costume. I’ve always found the Lois Lane character annoying, but in this film, she’s at least tolerable, even though Superman seems to fancy her more than she fancies him (how??), giving her a power over him (modern romance seems to be a game of ‘who can seem the least interested’ in the person they’re in a relationship with). The film itself was like watching the season finale of a live action cartoon, with characters already established and the villain’s stupidly convoluted master plan coming to a climax; all topped off with silly costumes and a bright visual colour palette. That said, there’s mild swearing in this, so not sure who the target audience is. Plot-wise, Lex Luthor’s grand plan makes no sense; it’s yet another get-rich quick scheme involving property prices. I mean, the guy has his very own (SPOILER) Superman clone at his disposal; he could literally do ANYTHING! Mr Terrific was the best character in the film, which shouldn’t be the case in a ‘Superman’ movie. Anyway, it was a decent movie. Not epic or grand, as a story involving a ‘Superman’ could (or should?) be, but pretty down to earth. I don’t think this would be anyone’s ‘favourite’ Superman movie, but it’s not going to be anyone’s least favourite either, which again, is an indication of just how ‘mid’ everything is these days!
