You spend all year waiting for it to arrive, and then before you’re ready for it, you’re already in the midst of Summer!
That’s how I often feel, and then, all too quickly, it’s September and the grip of another long Winter is on the horizon. So, to help me ‘feel’ that summer vibe (we’ve had great weather this year, but that summer feeling isn’t just about the weather), I put on ‘Point Break’, and the vibes instantly hit. I was never into this film, but one of my best friends loves it, and his passion for it infected me, and now I rate it almost as highly as he does! In fact, every time I see it, I appreciate it more. It really captures both sides of being a young man; on the one side you want to impress and be good at your job; be the do-gooder. On the other side, there’s rebelliousness that questions the bullshit of the world we’re born into, and the realization that life is really deeper and more ephemeral than simply following the rules of a system you had no say in creating, which benefits only the very few. Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze represent both sides of that equation. Patrick Swayze's character is actually the ‘good guy’ and his ethos is absolutely the correct one; but this is Hollywood, so to make him an unambiguous ‘bad guy’ he betrays his own ethics, just so the so called ‘good guys’ (the law) can win in the end. What’s great about this film is not the story, however, but the way it captures that summer mood. The beach, the party, the music and the romance; stepping outside your comfort zone and finding new friends… That’s summer. Great film, and I can’t wait until next Summer so I can watch it all over again!
