So I got invited to a screening of the Pharrell Williams documentary, made using (CG) Lego, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. It’s interesting that the film was actually shot and made in live-action, before then being re-constructed in the animated ‘Lego’ format, at the request of Pharrell Williams. It would be interesting to see the original version someday...
Anyway, on to the film itself! A very entertaining appraisal of one man’s contribution to our favourite tunes from twenty years ago (my God, has it been that long?!). Pharrell Williams is undeniably gifted; he and his cohorts literally defined an era.. but while this ‘Lego’ documentary is good fun to watch, it absolutely lacks substance; it's essentially, a puff piece. If you love the music of Pharrell Williams, then this film is an absolute must. If you’re looking for something with a bit more bite to it, then this ain’t it. A fun documentary though, and worth a watch.
