I love the first Moana. It’s absolutely my favourite Disney movie of recent times. Everything about it works: the arc, the songs, the pacing, the humour, and the characters!
So when Disney announced the sequel, I rolled my eyes. We’ve seen Disney do these cash-grabs before, with their ‘direct to DVD’ sequels that plagued the 90s and early 2000s. Unfortunately, this is exactly what Moana 2 seems like. A poor recreation of the first film, with all new forgettable songs and characters, and an arc that is merely a retread of the first film. That said, the film does get better towards the end, and the climax is cinematic, so for that, it’s worth watching. The highlight for me was the end credits version of the song ‘Beyond’. What an absolute banger! By far the best thing to come out of this unnecessary sequel.
