This film got rave reviews, and audiences seem to agree. I didn’t like it though. It was okay. Nothing terrible, but definitely not the masterpiece it’s made out to be.
The idea of having a period film with an 80s style soundtrack is totally my vibe; I loved that concept. Also, when the film stuck to table tennis, it was good. The problem, however, was that the film was just an endless series of side-quests. There were no moments to let the characters breathe, or contemplate their circumstances. It was just a bombardment of noise, and, it was too damn long! Worst of all, the protagonist, the eponymous ‘Marty Supreme’, was just plain obnoxious! He cons his way through the film, lying to everyone he meets, insulting them, and behaving in the most self-centred ways. Why would anyone want to follow this character on his journey? His redemption arc being that he finally accepts that he’s the father of the girl he impregnates; so what? That doesn’t exactly make him a hero, does it? The film attempts to show him going from an arrogant narcissist to being humbled by the end, but it doesn’t work, because ‘Marty Supreme’ only ever thinks about one person throughout the entire film: himself. If I don’t like the protagonist, I struggle to enjoy the movie. Massively overrated.
