The first film was great fun, with the eponymous villain being the best character in it, similar to the first (and best) Terminator movie.
Well, for the sequel, they went full T2, and made the antagonist the hero, whilst also switching genres! The first Terminator was a horror movie, and the second was an action movie; M3gan 2.0 goes from being a humoristic slasher movie, to being a full on ‘action comedy’, which is jarring to say the least! I think that’s why it probably wasn’t as successful as the first film; audiences were expecting something darker, even though the filmmakers expanded everything audiences liked about the first film (such as the humour, the dances, and the sassiness). That said, it’s a good film! As action-comedies go, it’s definitely up there! Being a fan of 80s movies, I could definitely see the homages, and it wouldn’t be out of place on the shelf of the local Video Shop. I found the film to be enjoyable, primarily because I had no expectations, and because M3gan is still a great character; she’s jokes! The same could not be said for the film’s villain, ‘Amelia’, another female android. Not only did the character lack the sassy charm of M3gan, but she also looked too human; the least they could have done was given her a mask, the same as M3gan. Aside from her appearance, she should have been more menacing too. Although Amelia kills a lot of people, it’s done in the style of an action movie, where nameless bodies just pile up, whereas doing it in the style of a horror movie would have been waaaaaay more satisfying. In fact, the entire horror element was very much missed! This film is basically a Terminator sequel, with two A.I. powered androids doing battle, and the human characters basically along for the ride; which is fine, because apart from the bad guys in the movie, they’re all pretty boring. Jermaine Clement was an obvious highlight! Not as good as the first one, but still a fun movie and worth watching! M3gan remains top tier, and I’d love to see her in an actual horror sequel!
