I Love animation, and animated movies, and in the wake of the Spider-verse movies, Sony Animation has been killing it! They’re producing films that push the artistic boundaries of the medium far more than any other mainstream Hollywood studio.
So I was looking forward to this movie, even though I know absolutely nothing about K-Pop. It was good! My main criteria for a good musical (which is what this movie is), is that it should have at least one memorable song; something you want to listen to after the show or movie is over, and this film had that (‘Golden’ was a banger). As for the story? It was pretty predictable and not that compelling. The film had all the usual ingredients: a protagonist that feels isolated from the world, learning to accept herself, the power of friendship, loads of ‘quip’ based humour etc. etc. Something we’ve seen a million times before from Hollywood, but it works. I liked the art; it didn’t really push the boundaries as much as the Spider-verse movies, but it’s still miles better than what any other studio is doing at the moment. The film is no masterpiece, but it is good, and I also appreciated the fact that it was about an Asian culture! What’s more, it tried to stay true to the traits and values of that culture, which is definitely the diversity I prefer to see (instead of simply taking established white characters, and making them black, which is what Hollywood usually does). This film absolutely should have had a theatrical release, but in a world dominated by streaming, where films come and go, I guess we should just be glad that this one at least found a mass audience to enjoy it.
