As I was watching ‘Blade Runner’ the other day, I was reminded of how much Ghost in the Shell was influenced by it, with the motif of ‘dolls’ as well as the overall artistic direction, so I thought I’d rewatch it!
The film was iconic as soon as it came out, and whilst it didn’t cause as much of a stir as Akira, it’s no less influential. I remember loving this movie back when I first watched it in the 90s, and I still have a fondness for it, but my favourite iteration of this Manga is the ‘Stand Alone Complex’ anime series. By comparison, this version seems more of an action movie, whereas the anime deals with issues of politics, philosophy and what it is to be human. It’s a great movie, but is definitely surpassed by the anime. Still, no ‘Ghost in the Shell’, no ‘Matrix’; it’s that simple. The artwork and animation are still amazing, so it’s definitely worth revisiting every few years!
