Another Robert Zemeckis film that I somehow managed to miss, and to be honest, it’s often better that way. Watching it at home, with limited expectations, one tends to be more forgiving of a film, especially a character driven film.
And although this is a character driven film, it does feature a spectacular sequence early on. This is a film about addiction, alcoholism in particular, but I think all addicts behave in a similar fashion; and as a film about addiction, it’s really good! Often, Hollywood tends to show addicts as people that end up on the bottom rung of society, when in actual fact, I think most addicts are high functioning, and because of that, their addiction is masked; they continue in their self-destructive behaviour because they can. Self-deception is a key trait of the addict, and this film shows that well. I won’t give too much away, but it’s a good film, and definitely worth a watch. Denzel is great, as ever, but I did feel the ‘romance’ angle was unnecessary; as if they needed to include a female character in the story, and didn’t quite know what to do with her, as is often the case with mainstream cinema. Still, give it a gander.
