I hadn't seen this film in over twenty years; I wasn't particularly impressed the first time round.
Now, having experienced a bit of life, I can clearly see how brilliant it is! This film would unquestionably be a masterpiece, if Nicole Kidman's performance was better; she really lets the film down with her fake fits of laughter. Fortunately, every other actor rises to the occasion. Not only is it a film about relationships, and the corrosive effects of jealousy, but it also hints at a world existing in plain sight; one which we wilfully choose not to see. When it comes to both the relationships we’re in, and the corruption of the world we live in, our eyes are wide shut. The way Kubrick slowly builds the tension is a masterclass in subtle filmmaking; before you know it, a film about a jealous husband is something far more sinister. Of course, it’s all a facade. No such Illuminati style societies actually exist, nor do the orgies they frequent. Just keep your head down, play happy families, pay your taxes and don’t ask any questions...
