I was really looking forward to Conclave, but ultimately, I found it disappointing.
The film started off well. I liked the slow, methodical pacing, and well placed shots, but it as it went on, it lost steam, and began to drag. Ralph Fiennes was superb, as he always is, so if you just want to watch one of the greats, then this will still appeal. The mystery underlying the film’s central narrative wasn’t compelling enough to sustain the film’s run time. I just didn’t care enough. Also, the film was ruined by an ending that came out of nowhere, and added an unnecessary ‘woke’ element. It seems like a movie designed to appeal to the awards season, more than actually appeal to a general audience. Shame, really; with a few teaks, it could have been really good.
