I basically just watched this movie for the production design, costumes and actors. I knew it was ‘yet another’ story about ‘taboo love’ and forbidden lesbianism, like so many films that centre around female protagonists; it’s all very predictable by now.
Still, I’m open-minded enough to want to enjoy it and be taken on an emotional journey. Unfortunately, this film didn’t move me in the slightest. Both female characters seemed to be nothing but self-centred, and that is not an endearing quality at all. When it came to the costume and production design, this film really shone; the use of colour was especially pleasing to the eye, and the period features really put you in that time and place. Cate Blanchett was great, as she always is, and Rooney Mara is also captivating, so from that perspective, it wasn’t bad. As said, it just didn’t move me.
