I think I speak for the world, when I say, we’re done with the MCU.
Nevertheless! (There’s always a ‘but’!) It was Valentines weekend, I was alone, and rather than celebrate this fact by myself, I figured I’d call on one of my mates and celebrate by going to the cinema! The film was as expected: it passes the time and will offer you some distraction whilst you’re staring at your phone. Sad that film’s are designed this way now. I think Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford are both good in it; the material, however, feels like an episode of one of Marvel’s much derided TV shows. The filmmakers missed the opportunity to give Sam Wilson the kind of hero’s journey story his character needed to cement him in his role as Captain America; maybe because they already tried (and failed) to do that in his TV show. This film was just another entry in Marvel’s conveyor belt of ensemble, CG-heavy films, with explosions at the end. A formula that can only ever work, if you care about the characters. Am I looking forward to Cap’s next adventure? Nope.
