I watched this film purely because Richard Linklater is a brilliant filmmaker, and Jack Black is capable of brilliance too.
This film, based on a true story, is a bit of a departure for both of them, in that it’s quite unlike any of their other films. The story is interesting, but it’s not the most entertaining. It seems dry, when the potential is there for either a darker or more comedic tone. The supporting actors are brilliant though; they absolutely convince you that they’re the real people from the actual town where the (true) story took place. McConaughey just plays himself, as usual. It’s a decent film, but you can live without it.
