Man, what an absolute stone-cold classic!
This film is one of my childhood favourites, which I know word for word! We’d record the film off TV at Christmas, watch it over and over again, somehow end up taping over it, and then record it again the next Christmas! Only to rinse and repeat! What can one say about ‘Back to the Future’? It’s about as close as you’re likely to get to a perfect movie. Everything and everyone in it is on point. There’s not a superfluous moment, and every scene moves the story forward; not only that, but the music is absolutely iconic! One thing I was particularly impressed by this time around, which I never really noticed in all my previous viewings, was how good ‘Lea Thompson’ is! Her coyness and fake shyness adds so much to her character. Even when she’s playing her older self, her mannerisms are so real! It’s one of those things that as a kid, I never even questioned! The older versions of the characters were old; I had no concept that it was young actors with make-up. I bought the 4k boxset, and even though this is the best version of the film available, the colours still seemed too warm, and the image appeared to have some slight ghosting. I’ve owned these movies in every format, and somehow, my memory of watching it on TV on a CRT is the most flawless experience. Speaking of which, I was shocked that the ‘To be Continued’ at the end of the movie was missing! That’s an integral part of the film for me; apparently it wasn’t in the original theatrical version of the film, which makes me long for the TV version even more! The TV edit also had the swearing cut out, and honestly, I think that works better. Anyway, the film is absolutely timeless. Do yourselves a favour and rewatch it!
