I feel like this film has gone under the radar, as no one seems to be talking about it, which is a shame as it’s probably the best film of the year so far!
It’s taut, compelling, well acted, and really enjoyable to watch! Seeing how the mystery unravels is what a good spy thriller is all about, and this one keeps you engaged all the way to the climax, which doesn’t disappoint, mostly thanks to the great acting. Cate Blanchett is always top draw, and she delivers once again in this movie. I did have an issue with was the cinematography. A lot of the interiors were dimly lit, to accommodate for a kind of bloom lighting effect, which was just a bit pretentious really. Also, there’s not much in terms of ‘seeing the money on screen’. The locations are limited and basic, which is great for the story, but it definitely could have been more visually exciting. Those are minor gripes really, because the film is definitely worth watching!

I’d never heard of this film until I saw it on IMDB, where it had really positive reviews, so I decided to watch it.
Sigh. I like the idea of telling a story in Northern Ireland, that isn’t about ‘the troubles’ but instead, about the kids that live in the city, doing what kids in every city do. Unfortunately, the ‘kids’ in this particular story were completely unlikeable! Just a bunch of scallywags up to no good! If you don't like the characters, then the story really doesn’t matter! Moreover, because of the heavy accents, it was difficult to make out what they were saying! It was therefore preferable that they spoke Irish, because then at least there were subtitles! Maybe that was the point, because one of the main themes of the film is the importance of the Irish language. I wish the film had a more a serious and heartfelt tone, because the subject matter really resonated. Instead, the filmmakers were going for a ‘trendy’ vibe, glamorising the use of drugs, and showing none of the negative aspects. The songs were good though. |
